The Bicicletta is a classic northern Italian aperitivo of Campari, dry white wine and a splash of soda. Light, sparkling and pleasantly bitter, it is the uncomplicated forerunner of today’s hugely popular Spritz.
Instructions
- Fill a wine glass with ice cubes.
- Add Campari and dry white wine.
- Stir briefly.
- Top up with soda.
- Garnish with an orange slice and serve.
Garnish: Orange slice
Pro tip: Use well-chilled white wine, then you need less ice and the drink stays aromatic.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the Bicicletta get its name?
The name means bicycle: supposedly because older gentlemen would cycle home a little wobbly afterward.
How does the Bicicletta differ from the Spritz?
The difference lies in the base: the Bicicletta uses still wine instead of Prosecco like the Spritz.
Which white wine works?
A dry, light white wine such as Pinot Grigio pairs ideally with the bitterness of the Campari.
