The Whiskey Smash is the fruity-fresh blend of Mint Julep and Whiskey Sour: bourbon meets fresh lemon, sugar syrup and plenty of mint. Served over crushed ice, it is the ideal summer drink for whisky lovers.

Instructions

  1. Gently muddle the mint leaves with sugar syrup and lemon juice in the shaker.
  2. Add bourbon whiskey.
  3. Fill with ice cubes and shake for about 12 seconds.
  4. Strain into a tumbler filled with crushed ice.
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve.

Garnish: Mint sprig

Pro tip: Press the mint leaves only gently when muddling - too vigorous pounding releases bitter compounds from the leaf veins and makes the drink harsh.

Frequently asked questions

Which whisky works for the Whiskey Smash?

Classically bourbon is used, whose sweetish vanilla and caramel notes harmonize well with mint and lemon. Rye whiskey gives a spicier version.

What is the difference between Smash and Julep?

Both use mint; the Smash additionally contains citrus juice and is therefore fresher and more sour. The Julep comes entirely without citrus.

Can I make the Whiskey Smash without crushed ice?

Crushed ice provides the necessary cooling and dilution. It also works with regular ice cubes, but becomes less fresh and stronger in alcohol.
