The Gold Rush is a modern classic from the legendary Milk & Honey bar: bourbon, fresh lemon and honey syrup in perfect balance. Three ingredients are enough for a silky, golden-colored sour that is at once simple and brilliant.

Instructions

  1. Add the bourbon whiskey, fresh lemon juice and honey syrup to a shaker.
  2. Fill up with ice cubes.
  3. Shake vigorously for about 12 seconds until the shaker frosts on the outside.
  4. Strain into a tumbler filled with one large ice cube.
  5. Garnish with a lemon zest and serve.

Garnish: Lemon zest

Pro tip: For the honey syrup, mix honey and warm water in a three-to-one ratio - this lets it spread easily and evenly through the drink.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Gold Rush come from?

The Gold Rush was created around 2001 at the New York bar Milk & Honey and is considered a modern classic that reinterprets the whiskey sour with honey.

Why honey syrup instead of pure honey?

Pure honey is too thick and blends poorly when shaken. As a syrup diluted with water, it dissolves evenly into the drink.

Which whisky works best?

A bold bourbon with vanilla and caramel notes harmonizes ideally with the honey. Rye whiskey also works and adds a spicier note.
