The Vesper Martini is probably the most famous literary cocktail, conceived by Ian Fleming for James Bond in Casino Royale. The blend of gin, vodka and Lillet Blanc creates a powerful, elegant drink. Shaken, not stirred - that is how 007 wanted it, and that is how the Vesper became immortal.

Instructions

  1. Put gin, vodka and Lillet Blanc into the shaker with plenty of ice.
  2. Shake vigorously until the drink is very cold.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe.
  4. Express a long lemon zest over the glass.
  5. Drop the zest into the glass and serve.

Garnish: Long lemon zest

Pro tip: Bond orders it shaken, but for a clear result you can also stir the Vesper - shaking makes it colder and slightly cloudier.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Vesper Martini come from?

The Vesper was invented by Ian Fleming in his novel Casino Royale and was assembled and named by James Bond himself.

Is the Vesper shaken or stirred?

In the novel Bond orders it shaken. Purists, however, stir it, since it consists only of clear spirits and thus stays crystal clear.

Can I use Kina Lillet instead of Lillet Blanc?

The original Kina Lillet no longer exists today. Lillet Blanc is the common substitute, and some add a touch of bitter to come closer to the original.
