The Dry Martini is regarded as the king of cocktails and the epitome of elegance. Just two ingredients - gin and dry vermouth - make a crystal-clear, ice-cold drink of pure refinement. Whether with olive or lemon zest, stirred ice-cold it reveals all its class.

Instructions

  1. Pre-chill a martini glass with ice or in the freezer.
  2. Add gin and dry vermouth to a mixing glass with plenty of ice.
  3. Stir cold for about 20 to 30 seconds until the drink is very cold.
  4. Strain into the chilled martini glass.
  5. Express a lemon zest over it or add an olive and serve.

Garnish: Lemon zest or green olive

Pro tip: Chill the martini glass in the freezer beforehand so the drink stays ice-cold as long as possible - temperature is decisive for the Martini.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Martini be shaken or stirred?

Classically the Dry Martini is stirred, since it consists only of clear spirits. Stirring keeps the drink silky and free of ice shards.

What does a dry Martini mean?

The less vermouth used, the drier the Martini. For an Extra Dry Martini only a hint of vermouth is used.

Olive or lemon zest as a garnish?

Both are classic. The olive makes the drink more savoury, while the lemon zest lends it a fresh, citrusy note.
