The Navy Grog is a bold tiki classic from the pen of Don the Beachcomber: three rums meet lime, grapefruit and honey. Multi-layered, aromatic and a genuine piece of bar history. A drink that awakens a longing for the South Seas.

Instructions

  1. Add all three rums to a shaker.
  2. Add lime juice, grapefruit juice and honey syrup.
  3. Fill with crushed ice and shake hard.
  4. Pour into a tumbler with fresh crushed ice.
  5. Garnish with a lime slice and mint and serve.

Garnish: Lime slice and mint

Pro tip: Stir the honey with a little warm water into a syrup beforehand - this way it spreads evenly in the cold drink.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Navy Grog come from?

The Navy Grog was created in the 1940s by tiki pioneer Donn Beach, known as Don the Beachcomber, and is a homage to the navy's rum rations.

Why three different rums?

The blend of white, brown and dark rum provides a multi-layered depth that no single rum could achieve on its own.

Can I replace the honey syrup with simple syrup?

That works, but the honey brings a special aromatic note that makes the drink rounder and more characterful.
