The Manhattan is one of the oldest and most refined cocktails of all and originated in the 1870s in New York. The combination of spicy rye, sweet vermouth and a hint of bitters makes a deep, elegant drink. Stirred and served in a martini glass, it is the epitome of classic bar culture.

Instructions

  1. Add rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters to an ice-filled mixing glass.
  2. Stir cold with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds.
  3. Pre-chill a martini glass.
  4. Strain the drink into the chilled glass.
  5. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.

Garnish: Cocktail cherry

Pro tip: Always stir the Manhattan, never shake it - this keeps it clear and silky instead of cloudy and foamy.

Frequently asked questions

Why rye instead of bourbon in a Manhattan?

Rye whiskey is the traditional choice and, with its spicy-dry note, provides more contrast to the sweet vermouth. Bourbon makes the drink milder and sweeter.

What is a Perfect Manhattan?

In a Perfect Manhattan, half of the sweet vermouth is replaced with dry vermouth, which makes the drink a little drier and more complex.

Can I serve the Manhattan on the rocks?

Classically it is served without ice in a martini glass. But over ice in a tumbler it works just as well if you prefer to enjoy it cooler and longer.
