Cocktail
Old Fashioned
How to make an Old Fashioned - the timeless whisky classic of bourbon, sugar cube and Angostura bitters. Simple IBA recipe to stir up.
The Old Fashioned is the forefather of all cocktails and dates back to the early 19th century. Its simplicity is its strength: whiskey, sugar and a few dashes of bitters, nothing else. It is precisely this reduction that makes it the eternal classic for connoisseurs who appreciate the pure character of the whiskey.
Instructions
- Place the sugar cube in the glass and soak it with the Angostura bitters and a little water.
- Crush the sugar with the muddler until it largely dissolves.
- Add a large ice cube to the glass and pour in the whiskey.
- Stir cold with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds.
- Express the orange zest over the glass and drop it in.
Garnish: Orange zest and cocktail cherry
Frequently asked questions
Bourbon or rye - which is better for the Old Fashioned?
Both are classic. Bourbon brings sweeter vanilla and caramel notes, rye makes a spicier, drier version. A matter of taste.
Do I have to use a sugar cube?
No, alternatively you can use 1 cl of simple syrup. The sugar cube is, however, the traditional method.
Does a cocktail cherry belong in it?
A cherry and orange zest are the common garnish. Purists often leave out the cherry for historical reasons.
