The Grog is the maritime hot drink par excellence: rum, sugar and hot water, nothing more is needed. The British Navy already warmed up with it, and on cold winter days it remains a reliable companion to this day.
Instructions
- Pre-warm the heatproof grog glass with hot water and empty it again.
- Put the brown sugar into the glass.
- Pour in the rum and stir briefly until the sugar dissolves.
- Top up with hot water.
- Add a lemon slice and serve.
Garnish: Lemon slice
Pro tip: Sailor's rule of thumb: rum is a must, sugar may, water should. The water should be hot but no longer boiling, so the rum keeps its aroma.
Frequently asked questions
Which rum is suitable for a Grog?
A bold brown rum or overproof rum works best, as it stands up against the hot water.
Where does the Grog originally come from?
The Grog goes back to the British Navy in the 18th century, where rum rations were diluted with water.
Can I also prepare the Grog with tea?
Yes, instead of hot water you can also use hot black tea, which adds an extra spicy note.
