Hot Buttered Rum is an American winter classic that develops a surprisingly creamy mouthfeel from butter, sugar and warm spices. The melted spiced butter makes it full-bodied and wonderfully warming when it is freezing outside.

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter, brown sugar and spices together in the prewarmed mug.
  2. Add the rum and stir briefly.
  3. Pour in the hot water.
  4. Stir well until the butter mixture has dissolved.
  5. Add a cinnamon stick and serve hot.

Garnish: Cinnamon stick

Pro tip: The butter should be at room temperature so it blends well with the sugar and spices. A larger batch of the spiced butter can be prepared ahead and frozen.

Frequently asked questions

Can you taste the butter in a Hot Buttered Rum?

The butter gives the drink a velvety, rounded texture but does not dominate. It merges with the spices into a creamy whole.

Which rum works best?

A robust dark rum pairs perfectly with butter and spices. An aged rum also works wonderfully.

Can I use milk instead of water?

Yes, with hot milk the drink becomes even creamier and richer.
