Christmas Punch is the epitome of cozy winter evenings: red wine, dark rum and a bouquet of cinnamon, cloves and orange melt into a warming drink. The aroma alone already spreads anticipation for the holidays. Perfect for the whole group on an Advent evening or at the local Christmas market.

Instructions

  1. Put the red wine with the juice of the oranges and the brown sugar into a pot.
  2. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves and a little orange peel.
  3. Heat everything slowly without letting it boil.
  4. Let it steep over low heat for about 15 minutes.
  5. Add the rum and warm briefly.
  6. Strain through a sieve into mugs and serve.

Garnish: Orange slice and cinnamon stick

Pro tip: Never let the punch boil, otherwise the alcohol evaporates and the spices turn bitter - let it steep just below the boiling point.

Frequently asked questions

How does Christmas Punch differ from mulled wine?

Besides red wine, Christmas Punch also contains spirits such as rum as well as fruit juices, whereas mulled wine usually consists only of spiced wine.

Can I also make the punch with white wine?

Yes, with white wine the punch becomes lighter and fruitier. The spices and the rum go just as well as with the red wine version.

How long does homemade punch keep?

In the fridge the punch keeps for about two to three days and can be gently reheated if needed.
