The Corpse Reviver No. 1 is the robust, stirred variant of the famous reviver family. Cognac, calvados and sweet vermouth make a warming, spirit-forward drink that lives up to its name as a pick-me-up.

Instructions

  1. Add cognac, calvados and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass.
  2. Fill with ice cubes.
  3. Stir cold for about 25 seconds.
  4. Strain into a pre-chilled coupe.
  5. Garnish with a lemon zest and serve.

Garnish: Lemon zest

Pro tip: Unlike the zesty No. 2, the No. 1 is a stirred, spirit-forward drink - stir it well and cold so it turns round and silky.

Why is the drink called Corpse Reviver?

Reviver cocktails were considered pick-me-ups for the morning after a hard-drinking night.

Can I substitute the calvados?

Calvados is defining, but in a pinch a good apple brandy works, though the aroma comes out a bit different.
