The Brandy Smash is a timeless short drink from the 19th century: cognac, fresh mint, a little sugar and lemon over crushed ice. Refreshing, aromatic and quick to make - a classic that Jerry Thomas himself appreciated.

Instructions

  1. Lightly muddle the lemon wedges and mint with the sugar syrup in the shaker.
  2. Add cognac and fill up with ice cubes.
  3. Shake for about 10 seconds.
  4. Strain into a tumbler filled with crushed ice.
  5. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and serve.

Garnish: Mint sprig

Pro tip: Press the lemon wedges only lightly, otherwise too much bitterness is released from the peel and the smash turns unpleasantly harsh.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smash?

A smash is a drink family made of a spirit, fresh herbs such as mint, a little sugar and crushed ice.

Can I use brandy instead of cognac?

Yes, any good brandy works, but cognac provides especially fine fruit and oak notes.

Why press fresh mint rather than crush it?

Light pressing releases the essential oils, while heavy crushing would make the leaves bitter.
