The Alexander is a velvety dessert cocktail that surprises with the combination of gin, chocolate and cream. Despite the robust gin it tastes soft and sweet, almost like a liquid dessert. A seductive classic for a cosy end to the evening.

Instructions

  1. Add gin, cacao liqueur and cream to a shaker.
  2. Top up with plenty of ice cubes.
  3. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the cream emulsifies.
  4. Double-strain into a chilled coupe.
  5. Sprinkle with freshly grated nutmeg.

Garnish: Freshly grated nutmeg

Pro tip: Shake the drink vigorously and long enough so the cream emulsifies nicely and the cocktail develops a velvety, slightly foamy texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Alexander made with gin or brandy?

The original is a gin cocktail. The later variation with brandy is called Brandy Alexander and is almost better known today.

Which cacao liqueur works best?

Brown crème de cacao gives the drink a more intense chocolate note and the typical colour, while white cacao liqueur keeps it lighter.

Can I make the Alexander with milk instead of cream?

Cream provides the typical creamy body. With milk it becomes considerably thinner and less velvety.
