Ice Cube Trays

Ice is the most underrated ingredient in a cocktail. Large, clear ice cubes melt more slowly and dilute the drink less – perfect for Old Fashioned and Negroni. For chilled, shaken drinks, crushed ice is ideal. Silicone moulds for large cubes or spheres, clear-ice moulds and a good ice crusher belong in every home bar.

What to look for

  • Cube size: large cubes (4–6 cm) melt more slowly
  • Material: food-grade silicone releases easily from the mould
  • Lid: prevents freezer odour and spillage
  • Clear ice: special moulds freeze top-down for crystal-clear cubes

Frequently asked questions

Why are large ice cubes better?

They have less surface area relative to their volume and therefore melt more slowly. The drink stays cold longer without diluting heavily.

How do I make clear ice?

Clear ice forms by directional freezing from the top, so air bubbles are pushed downward. Special clear-ice moulds with an insulated container do this automatically.

What do I need crushed ice for?

For drinks like Mojito, Caipirinha, Julep or Tiki cocktails. The fine ice chills quickly and gives the typical frosty look.
