Apple punch is the cosy classic for cold winter days and Christmas markets at home. Fruity apple juice, warming rum and wintry spices like cinnamon and clove make for a fragrant hot drink. Quick to make and ideal for sociable gatherings.

Instructions

  1. Add apple juice with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange slices to a pot.
  2. Heat slowly over medium heat, but do not let it boil.
  3. Let it steep for about 10 minutes so the spices unfold.
  4. Stir in the honey until it has dissolved.
  5. Take the pot off the heat and stir in the rum.
  6. Pour into punch glasses and garnish with apple and orange slices.

Garnish: Apple and orange slices

Pro tip: Do not let the punch boil again after adding the rum - otherwise the alcohol evaporates and the fine aroma of the spirit is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the apple punch without alcohol?

Yes, simply leave out the rum. The apple juice with spices and honey also makes a warming winter punch without alcohol.

How long does the punch stay warm?

In a pot on the lowest setting or in a punch bowl with a warmer it stays warm for several hours. Just do not bring it back to a boil.

Which apple juice works best?

Cloudy apple juice has more aroma and body than clear juice and makes the punch rounder in flavour.
