Maple Old Fashioned
How to make a Maple Old Fashioned - the autumnal variant of the classic with bourbon, real maple syrup instead of sugar and aromatic bitters.
The Maple Old Fashioned is the warm, autumnal interpretation of the timeless classic: real maple syrup replaces the sugar and gives the strong bourbon a gentle caramel sweetness. Together with aromatic bitters and orange oil, it makes a deeply aromatic, spirit-forward drink. Perfect for cooler evenings.
Instructions
- Add maple syrup and both bitters to the mixing glass.
- Add bourbon and fill up with ice cubes.
- Stir cold with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds.
- Strain into a tumbler with one large ice cube.
- Express an orange zest over the glass.
- Drop the zest into the glass as a garnish.
Garnish: Orange zest
Frequently asked questions
What sets the Maple Old Fashioned apart from the original?
Instead of a sugar cube or simple syrup, real maple syrup is used, which gives the drink a warm, autumnal caramel note.
Which whiskey works best?
A full-bodied bourbon with vanilla and oak aromas harmonizes best with the maple syrup, alternatively a spicy rye also works.
How much maple syrup should I use?
About 1 cl is enough - the Old Fashioned should stay spirit-forward, the syrup only rounds it off and sweetens subtly.
