The Hurricane is the easy-drinking star from New Orleans, inseparable from the legendary bar Pat O’Brien’s. Its bright red colour and the fruity blend of two rums, passion fruit and citrus make it a party favourite. It is named after the lantern-shaped glass in which it is served.

Instructions

  1. Add both types of rum to the shaker.
  2. Add the passion fruit syrup, orange and lime juice.
  3. Top up with ice cubes and shake vigorously.
  4. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with crushed ice.
  5. Garnish with an orange slice and a cocktail cherry.

Garnish: Orange slice and cocktail cherry

Pro tip: The curved hurricane glass gives the drink its name - its shape recalls a storm lantern. Crushed ice keeps the drink nice and cold.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Hurricane cocktail come from?

The Hurricane was invented in the 1940s at the bar Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans and remains a landmark of the French Quarter to this day.

Why is the drink called Hurricane?

The name comes from the typical glass, which has the shape of an old storm lantern (a hurricane lamp).

Can I substitute the passion fruit syrup?

You can also use passion fruit nectar with a little sugar syrup. Real passion fruit syrup, however, delivers the most intense and authentic note.
