The Bahama Mama brings the spirit of the Bahamas straight into your glass: fruity, sunny and with plenty of rum. Two kinds of rum and coconut liqueur meet pineapple and orange, while the grenadine creates the pretty colour gradient. An easy-drinking tiki drink whose strength is happily underestimated.

Instructions

  1. Add both rums and the coconut liqueur to the shaker.
  2. Add pineapple and orange juice.
  3. Fill up with ice cubes and shake vigorously.
  4. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with crushed ice.
  5. Add the grenadine slowly and garnish with orange and cherry.

Garnish: Orange slice and cocktail cherry

Pro tip: The grenadine creates the signature colour gradient - let it run in slowly and it will settle red at the bottom.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Bahama Mama come from?

As the name suggests, the cocktail comes from the Bahamas, where it is one of the most popular beach and holiday drinks.

What can I replace coconut liqueur with?

You can also use coconut cream or a little coconut syrup. The liqueur adds extra alcohol, so otherwise make the drink a bit stronger on rum.

How strong is a Bahama Mama?

With two rums plus coconut liqueur it is surprisingly strong. The fruit juices make it easy-drinking, which is why people tend to underestimate its effect.
