The Between the Sheets is an elegant classic of early bar culture and essentially a Sidecar with an extra shot of white rum. The combination of cognac and rum gives the drink depth, while lemon juice and triple sec provide the typical sour balance. A strong, refined cocktail for connoisseurs.

Instructions

  1. Add rum, cognac, triple sec and lemon juice to a shaker.
  2. Fill with plenty of ice cubes.
  3. Shake hard for about 15 seconds until the shaker frosts on the outside.
  4. Strain into a pre-chilled coupe.
  5. Garnish with a lemon zest and serve.

Garnish: Lemon zest

Pro tip: Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice - it brings the acidity needed to balance the two spirits and the sweet triple sec.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Between the Sheets come from?

The cocktail probably emerged in the 1930s and is considered a stronger version of the Sidecar, with the addition of white rum.

Which cognac works best?

A mild VS or VSOP cognac works well, as it blends harmoniously with the rum without dominating.

Can I mix the drink without triple sec?

Triple sec is central to the flavor. Another orange liqueur works as a substitute, but you should not leave it out entirely.
