Jigger (Measure)

A cocktail lives on balance – and that only works with precise measuring. The jigger is the double-sided bar measure, usually 2 cl and 4 cl. Pouring "by feel" rarely gives you the same drink twice. There are classic double jiggers in stainless steel, Japanese jiggers with fine internal graduation and measuring cups with a scale for beginners.

What to look for

  • Graduation: internal markings (e.g. 1, 1.5, 2, 3 cl) are more versatile
  • Material: stainless steel is durable and flavour-neutral
  • Stability: Japanese jiggers are slim but tip over more easily
  • Sizes: 2/4 cl is standard, a second measure (1/2 cl) helps with bitters & syrup

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 cl in a jigger?

1 cl equals 10 ml. A standard jigger usually measures 2 cl (20 ml) on the small side and 4 cl (40 ml) on the large side.

Do I really need a jigger?

For consistently good drinks, yes. Even small deviations noticeably shift the balance between spirit, acidity and sweetness.

Japanese or classic jigger?

The Japanese jigger is slim, precise and often has internal graduation. The classic double jigger is cheaper and more stable. Both work well.
