The Toreador comes from the golden tiki era and combines tequila with coffee liqueur into a surprisingly elegant drink. A cap of soft-whipped cream and a hint of cocoa make it a dessert in a glass. Anyone who likes an Espresso Martini will also appreciate this forgotten classic.

Instructions

  1. Put tequila and coffee liqueur into the shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
  3. Strain into a pre-chilled coupe.
  4. Carefully set the soft-whipped cream on top.
  5. Dust with a little cocoa powder and serve.

Garnish: Cocoa powder

Pro tip: Whip the cream only to soft peaks, then it is easier to set as an even cap on top of the drink.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the Toreador special?

The combination of tequila and coffee liqueur with a cap of cream makes it a dessert-like cocktail.

Which tequila works?

A mild Blanco tequila harmonizes well, while a Reposado adds extra vanilla and wood notes.

Can I leave out the cream?

Without cream the drink becomes much more spirit-forward and loses its creamy character, so a little cream is worth it.
