The Hot Toddy is the warming hot drink for cold evenings and scratchy throats. Whisky, honey and lemon come together with hot water to make a cosy classic that has been called upon against the cold for generations.

Instructions

  1. Add the honey to the prewarmed glass.
  2. Add the whisky and lemon juice.
  3. Top up with hot water.
  4. Stir until the honey has fully dissolved.
  5. Add a lemon slice and serve hot.

Garnish: Lemon slice studded with cloves

Pro tip: The water should be hot but not boiling - this preserves the aroma of the whisky. A lemon slice studded with cloves adds a fine spicy note.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Hot Toddy really help with a cold?

A Hot Toddy is no substitute for medicine, but the combination of warmth, honey and lemon is traditionally felt to be soothing for a scratchy throat.

Which whisky is best suited?

A mild blended Scotch or bourbon works well. A smoky Islay whisky gives the toddy a more robust note.

Can I make the Hot Toddy without alcohol?

Yes, simply leave out the whisky and add more hot water or tea - then it becomes a warming honey-lemon tea.
