Shot
Irish Slammer
How to make an Irish Slammer - the bomb shot of Irish whiskey and cream liqueur dropped into a glass of stout. Drink fast before it curdles.
The Irish Slammer is a powerful bomb shot that celebrates the Irish bar tradition. A shot of whiskey and cream liqueur is dropped into a half-full glass of stout and immediately drunk in one go. Speed is essential, because the cream liqueur curdles in the acidic beer within seconds.
Instructions
- Pour the stout about halfway into a larger glass.
- Pour the whiskey into a shot glass.
- Carefully layer the cream liqueur on top of the whiskey.
- Drop the filled shot glass into the stout.
- Drink it down immediately in one go.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the shot now called Irish Slammer?
The older name caused offence due to its reference to bombings. Bars therefore increasingly use the more neutral term Irish Slammer.
Why do you have to drink the Slammer quickly?
The cream liqueur reacts with the acidity of the stout and starts to curdle. Wait too long and you have a lumpy, unappetizing mixture in the glass.
Which beer is best suited?
A creamy Irish stout like Guinness is the classic choice. Its roasted malt notes harmonize with whiskey and cream liqueur.
