The B52 is the king of layered shots - three liqueurs floating in perfectly separated layers on top of each other. Coffee liqueur, creamy Baileys and fruity Grand Marnier make for a sweet taste experience that turns heads at any party. The art lies in pouring it correctly.

Instructions

  1. Pour the Kahlua into a shot glass as the bottom layer.
  2. Hold a bar spoon rounded-side up just above the first layer.
  3. Slowly pour the Baileys over the spoon so it rests as the second layer.
  4. In the same way, pour the Grand Marnier on top as the highest layer.
  5. Serve carefully without mixing the layers.

Garnish: None

Pro tip: Pour each layer slowly over the back of a bar spoon into the glass - that way the liqueur runs gently down the glass wall and doesn't mix with the layer below.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the layers of the B52 stay separate?

The three liqueurs have different densities. The heavy Kahlua stays at the bottom, the lighter Grand Marnier on top. Pouring slowly over a spoon prevents mixing.

Can you set the B52 on fire?

Some people flambe the top Grand Marnier layer. This is optional, looks spectacular, but should only be drunk carefully and with the flame extinguished.

Where does the name B52 come from?

The shot is named after the US bomber B-52. It was probably invented in the late 1970s in Canada.
